人が力に屈服し、人格を失ってしまった状態。それが不幸と呼ばれる。不幸はまったく理不尽に人に食い込んでくる。ヴェイユは工場のなかで魂のない奴隷へと下落したたくさんの人間を見、自らもそれを体験した。真の不幸は苦しんでいる当人すら自分の苦しみのありさまを理解できないほどに思考力を奪う。そのように不幸な人は、人格としては存在すらしていないのである。
